The Department of Physiology and Ethology explores a diverse array of subjects within the fields of reproductive biology, animal welfare, and neurobiology. In the field of reproductive biology, our research is centred on the study of the molecular processes and proteins of the tetraspanin family, which play a pivotal role in the processes of fertilisation and gamete maturation in cattle and other species. Additionally, our research encompasses animal welfare, with a particular emphasis on the quality of life of farm animals, particularly poultry. In neurobiology, our research focuses on the neurobiological basis of behaviour, with a particular emphasis on songbirds and their capacity for learning and imitation of sounds, as well as neurogenesis in the adult brain. These research areas are linked to applied research and have the potential to contribute to a better understanding and improvement of animal welfare in agriculture. We collaborate on international projects and employ advanced techniques and instrumentation in our work.
