The Institute of Animal Biochemistry and Genetics of the Centre of Biosciences of the Slovak Academy of Sciences is engaged in both basic and applied research in the field of biological and agricultural sciences. Its work is focused on elucidating the molecular, biological, physiological, biochemical and genetic processes occurring in animals and microorganisms. The research programme is primarily concerned with the cell biology of membranes and their role in energy transformation, the function of membrane antigens in immunological and reproductive processes, neurobiological and physiological mechanisms of behavioural control in animals under normal and extreme conditions, and the application of knowledge of membrane processes in nanotechnology, biotechnology, agricultural and medical fields. The Institute disseminates the findings of its scientific research activities through the publication of papers in major international journals with a high impact factor, as well as through press releases and other forms of media.
The Institute employs a staff of 45-50 individuals, comprising research scientists and PhD students, across two departments: the Department of Membrane Biochemistry and the Department of Physiology and Ethology. The Institute maintains active working contacts with a number of leading foreign institutions (Belgium, Germany, Austria, Russia, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Sweden, the USA, Japan) in the areas of its activity.
IABG SAS is engaged in the provision of higher education at both the first and second degree levels in collaboration with four faculties of Bratislava universities (Faculty of Natural Sciences CU, Faculty of Pharmacy CU, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics CU, Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology STU). In this capacity, the Institute’s personnel contribute to lectures, seminars and laboratory exercises, in addition to the supervision of bachelor and diploma theses.
