The Institute of Animal Biochemistry and Genetics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences was originally situated in the village of Ivanka pri Dunaji, approximately 5 km from the border of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The Institute was established in 1990 following the independence of a detached department of the Institute of Animal Physiology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice, which had existed in Ivanka pri Dunaji since 1969. At the time of its establishment, the Institute existed as a joint workplace of three organisations (the Institute of Animal Physiology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Experimental Veterinary Medicine, and the Institute of Zoohygiene and Veterinary Technology). During the initial years of its independent existence, the Institute underwent several organisational changes and significant staff reductions.
