Tetraspanins are proteins of cell membranes defined by a specific structure. Their characteristic feature is the ability to associate with other tetraspanins, proteins and also lipids to form functional tetraspanin web affecting cell morphology, as well as fusion, motility, signalling and other cellular processes. It has been shown that tetraspanins are also involved in the fertilization process in mammals; they act within the complexes necessary for successful fertilization and zygote formation. The Laboratory of Reproductive Physiology is primarily concerned with the study of the structure and dynamics of tetraspanin web of bovine gametes (oocytes and sperm) and developmental stages during their maturation in the genital organs, ovaries, testes and epididymides. We also study the localization and distribution of tetraspanins during the processes determining the ability of ejaculated sperm to pass through the zona pellucida and penetrate the oocyte cytoplasm by stimulation of sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction in vitro and moreover, during early embryonic development using fertilization in vitro.
